18. Pause (Meteorology), noun. The frontier between one layer of the atmosphere and another: the troposphere is bounded by the tropopause, the stratosphere by the stratopause, the mesosphere by the mesopause, and the thermosphere by the thermopause. Pauses are regions of great transformations in the atmosphere’s temperature, density, chemistry, and circulation.
