20. Foramina, noun, plural of foramen. In anatomy, any opening or hole; usually foramina are passages through which blood vessels, nerves, and muscles are threaded. Ultimately from Latin forare, “to pierce.”
The human body contains two apertures that both go by the name of foramina ovale, for their oval shape. One sits at the base of the skull; one connects the left and right atria of the fetal heart, but closes at birth—or should close—into a shallow indentation, the lifelong echo of a door that was.
