38. Poikilothermic, adjective. From Greek poikilos, “variegated,” + thermos, “hot.” Having a fluctuating internal temperature. Most cold-blooded animals (ectotherms), are also poikilothermic, but the two terms are not interchangeable. It is possible for an ectotherm to maintain a constant body temperature by remaining in an environment whose temperature is relatively constant over time.
