57. Chemesthesis, noun. From Greek khymeia, “alchemy,” + aisthēsis, “feeling, perception.” The consciousness of sensations that are due to chemical, not tactile, stimulation. A chemesthetic sensation occurs when a chemical substance, usually an irritant such as the capsaicinoids in chili peppers or the volatile sulphur compound in an onion that brings you to tears, binds to and activates a sensory receptor in the skin or mucus membranes.
